The history of Grinder Bikes
As a Service Manager in retail bicycle shops, Jon Grinder was constantly amazed at how many customers "made do" with the bikes that were available on the sales floor. Many times, people looking for simple, reliable transportation simply did without, in light of the fact that nearly every bike available was aimed toward the fitness rider or the weekend racer.

On quite a few occasions, Jon talked his customers into bringing their old 10 speed in and having it modified to suit their present needs. Flat bars, larger tires, better brake pads, lower gear ratios; these were some of the modifications made to countless Peugeots, Schwinns, Motobecanes and other classic road bikes from the American bicycle boom of the 1970's.

Needless to say, this did not always sit so well with the owners and sales managers of the shops in which Jon worked. Eventually, he left the retail bike business behind, but he never left bikes behind. Jon's friends benefitted from his love of bike work, and eventually the idea of having a go at custom building bikes for the public became a reality.

At Grinder Bikes, we build singlespeed and fixed gear bikes using "experienced" frames and parts, and we can customize them to match our customers' needs and budget. Handlebars, brakes, levers, wheel size; they are all interchangeable to suit.

We believe that quality parts and frames retain their quality. Unless you are racing, the latest racing bike available is not necessarily your best choice. A nice lugged steel frame has a ride quality that must be experienced to be appreciated, and the fixed gear drivetrain offers unparalleled efficiency and simplicity for the urban rider and commuter. Singlespeed bikes, with a freewheel, may be more appropriate for your commute. You decide. Heck, we'll even build you a bike with a derailleur and multiple speeds if you want. Be as hardcore as you want, or as utilitarian. It's your bike.

Take a look around the site. If you don't see what you're looking for, contact us with your needs and we will do our best to hook you up.
